OHSWEKEN, ON – November 14, 2016 – Six Nations of the Grand River Development Corporation (SNGRDC) along with renewable energy partners, Niagara Regional Wind Farm, Brant Renewable Energy and the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) sponsored a hands-on learning experience for over 200 youth in Grades 4-6 last week. Over the course of four days the Elephants Thoughts program delivered workshops focused on what energy is, where it comes from and how we can produce it in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way.
The Elephant Thoughts program is an interactive, hands-on learning experience that helps youth understand the importance of producing energy from renewable versus non-renewable sources. “SNGRDC strongly believes in investing in renewable energy in order to protect our coming generations and feels it is important to provide opportunities for our community and youth to learn about these green sources in order to make informed decisions” says Tabitha Curley, Corporate Communication Officer for SNGRDC.
“The hands on approach was a huge highlight, students were engaged throughout the day,” said Lisa Golding, Grade 6 teacher at Jamieson Elementary. SNGRDC current clean energy portfolio is capable of producing over 900 MW of renewable energy through its direct or indirect involvement in 13 solar or wind power projects surrounding the Six Nations Territory.
