SIX NATIONS OF THE GRAND RIVER, ON – November 29, 2018- Six Nations of the Grand River Development Corporation’s (SNGRDC) Project Department, has been energetically working on the Phase One revitalization of Chiefswood Park through the construction of 13 glamping accommodations. The team of seven, comprised solely of Six Nations workers, is extremely proud to be completing the construction alongside local sub-contractors. Over the next few years, employment opportunities for community members will continue to grow through the introduction of immersive experiences and programming at the park by Six Nations Tourism. Additional programming will provide a unique place of employment for the people in the Six Nations Community who work towards preserving our authentic Haudenosaunee Culture.
“So far, two old unusable buildings have been removed, and five cabins have been built and enclosed with roofs, with a sixth cabin nearly enclosed,” said Jason Lickers, Lead Construction Hand at SNGRDC. “Our goal is to have eight cabins completely enclosed with doors and windows by December 2018. Once the winter months hit, construction will move to the inside of the cabins where the team will begin the interior build.” Construction of all 13 cabins, including landscaping, is estimated to be completed by September 2019. The cabins will be able to house one to six guests depending on the size. The larger cabin is 594 square feet, and the smaller studio style cabin is 342 square feet. Both cabin styles will include a covered porch, private bathroom, master bedroom, living space, kitchenette and loft area. Two of the cabins will be wheelchair accessible.
In addition to construction taking place on the top portion of the park, the bottom portion has also received several updates including a new pavilion complete with electrical hook-ups, and a new foot bridge. A new seasonal boat dock was also installed thanks to funding received from Two Rivers Community Development through the Aboriginal Economic Development Fund-Community Economic Grant. “We are so thankful for this funding to not only build a new boat dock, but also to enhance future programming at the park,” said Constance Jamieson, SNGRDC Manager of Tourism.
Moving forward, Chiefswood Park will continue to offer their Partnership Program to support and foster the amazing voices within the community. This fee reduction program is available to groups who’s programming directly benefits the Six Nations community and its members, and/or seeks to increase the profile of Six Nations locally, nationally, or internationally.
